Split Ends and Spas

The seeds for what would later be called Grizzled Teddy Company were planted during a barbershop visit in Spring 2019. From the moment I stepped through the door, I noticed the shop had a great vibe. While waiting for my appointment, I watched as barbers and clients engaged in a fierce debate about sports, gave each other relationship advice, discussed potential business ventures and much more. Conversation and atmosphere play a huge role in my assessment of a barbershop and I knew early on this visit would be special!

My appointment was scheduled with a barber who had cut my hair previously but at a different location. We met through a mutual friend who highly recommended the barber for his customer service and skills. I am particular with barbers and was only willing to book with someone I could trust. This need for familiarity was heightened by the fact that I would be attending two important events that evening and wanted to look my best.

The barber was the perfect blend between artisan and educator. I tend to let way too much time go between haircuts so I think he was excited to work with a blank canvas. Before employing any technique, he would explain its necessity and the benefits of the maneuver. He was educating me throughout the appointment but at no point did I feel demeaned or insulted.

While trimming and shaping up my facial hair the barber asked me a question: “Do you moisturize and condition your beard?” I looked at him puzzled for a moment and then responded curiously, “No … should I be?” He grinned and replied “Well, you should.” He pointed out that my facial hair was dry, brittle and had split ends. He provided me with a regimen that could protect, soften, and strengthen my facial hair. In 25 years of receiving haircuts, no barber had ever provided tips for maintenance or stressed the importance of daily grooming routines.

After sharing that wisdom he offered a complimentary beard service to correct the damage and I agreed. This routine haircut quickly turned into a memorable experience. I received a hot towel treatment, leave-in conditioner, beard oil, butter, and balm. When the treatment was complete I reviewed his work in the mirror and was astonished. My beard had never looked so full, healthy, and regal. I never knew that my skin and facial hair could look that good! That day it was clear I entered a barbershop but an hour later I exited a spa.
